"Ambrose" a Friendly Scarecrow

This is probably one of the largest vignettes I will ever make. The size was inspired by the size of my sideboard buffet in my formal dining room. Displayed the way it is in the photos below, it is 36 inches wide, about 12 inches deep.

Autumn is my favorite season. . . a scarecrow seemed like a natural first step back into sculpting.

What I sculpted: Ambrose, of course. His head/neck, forearms/hands, lower legs/feet. I also sculpted all the pumpkins, ears of corn, and the seed sack Ambrose holds.

Ambrose has French paperweight glass eyes and rag hair that I created. I also created his beanie and under-sweater. His shirt and pants were purchased (much obliged to vintage G.I. Joe Action figure/doll Ebay dealers). I painted his facial features and then grubbied Ambrose with acrylic paints to give him a, came-in-from-the-field look. I added 'straw' to his shirt sleeves and pant cuffs. All other props were purchased. I stained the crates. Ambrose is sculpted from PREMO clay. The pumpkins are a variety of clays: Premo, Kato and Fimo. The corn is Premo.

I created Ambrose with a twisted aluminum wire armature, so he is pose-able and self-supporting. His torso, upper arms (from the elbow joint to his shoulder) and legs (from the knee joint to his torso) I created with batting wrapped over his wire frame. Ambrose stands about 12 inches tall, including his beanie.

In all, it took me about 6 weeks from start to finish.
